This new piece, introduced at the recent 3 Days of Design event, ingeniously merges fashion-inspired draping with a sophisticated, concealed suspension system. Moving away from rigid, precisely tailored forms, the 'Bascule' embraces soft silhouettes and a dynamic interaction with its occupant, promising unparalleled comfort and aesthetic flexibility.
The name 'Bascule,' derived from the French word for 'seesaw,' aptly describes the chair's core functionality. Its generously proportioned seat is enveloped in a loosely tailored textile cover, reminiscent of a gracefully draped jacket. This seemingly simple exterior belies a complex internal mechanism, expertly engineered by Vitra, that automatically adjusts to the sitter's weight. This allows for a smooth transition from an upright posture to a nearly horizontal recline, adapting fluidly to different body types and preferences.
Designers Lisa Ertel and Anne-Sophie Oberkrome conceived 'Bascule' around this novel mechanism.
