Apple's New Device Leasing Program: Apple Upgrade

Apple has introduced an innovative financial offering, the "Apple Upgrade" program, designed to enhance accessibility to its premium suite of devices. This new leasing model, a collaboration with Klarna, seeks to mitigate the initial cost barrier for consumers in the United States, allowing them to enjoy the latest iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, and iPad models through manageable monthly installments. The program's launch signals Apple's strategic pivot towards subscription-like ownership, making its products more attainable in a rapidly evolving market.

Details of Apple's Flexible Device Ownership Initiative

In a significant move to reshape consumer access to its products, Apple officially rolled out its "Apple Upgrade" program on July 28, 2026. This initiative, facilitated by a partnership with financial technology firm Klarna, enables eligible customers in the United States to lease various Apple devices—including iPhones, Apple Watches, Macs, and iPads—through convenient monthly payment schemes. Customers can enroll in this program seamlessly, either online via the Apple Store website, through the dedicated Apple Store application, or by visiting any physical Apple Store location across the nation.

The program offers diverse leasing durations tailored to different product categories. For instance, the iPhone and Apple Watch are available under 12-month and 24-month plans. Mac computers and iPads, conversely, can be leased over longer terms, specifically 24-month or 36-month periods. Entry-level pricing is quite attractive, with Apple Watch leases beginning at $11.99 per month, iPhone leases at $17.99 monthly, and iPads also starting at $11.99 per month, albeit on the 36-month plan. Mac devices are available from $24.99 per month for a 36-month lease.

To further reduce monthly expenses, new enrollees have the option to trade in their current devices through Apple's official Trade In program, which directly lowers their lease payments. Additionally, customers utilizing their Apple Card for lease payments will benefit from a three percent Daily Cash back reward, aligning with the standard cashback rate for other Apple purchases. The application process for Apple Upgrade is designed to be user-friendly and quick, involving a soft credit inquiry that is explicitly stated not to negatively impact the applicant's credit score. Upon approval, the transaction proceeds smoothly, allowing customers to acquire their desired devices without delay.

A key feature of the program is its inherent flexibility at the conclusion of the lease term. Customers are presented with three clear choices: they can seamlessly upgrade to the newest device generation, opt to purchase their existing device outright with a one-time payment, or return the device to exit the program entirely. All billing, payment scheduling, and financial management aspects are conveniently handled through Klarna. This new offering replaces the former iPhone Upgrade Program, which is being phased out. Existing participants in the previous program, after completing 12 monthly payments, can transition to Apple Upgrade, purchase their device, or choose carrier financing. Apple is providing assistance at its retail stores for customers wishing to return their iPhone and finalize their loan under the old program.

Karen Rasmussen, Apple's vice president of the Apple Store online, emphasized that the program underscores Apple's customer-centric philosophy, providing a more adaptable payment solution for beloved products. This launch comes shortly after Apple implemented price increases across many of its product lines, including Macs and iPads, indicating a strategic effort to make these technologies more financially accessible to a broader consumer base in the U.S.

Apple's introduction of the Apple Upgrade program signifies a strategic evolution in how consumers acquire and utilize its cutting-edge technology. In an era where technological advancements are rapid and product lifecycles are increasingly short, traditional outright ownership can become a financial burden. This leasing model offers a compelling alternative, allowing users to consistently access the latest innovations without the significant upfront investment. It effectively democratizes access to premium Apple products, potentially expanding the brand's reach and fostering greater user engagement. However, it also nudges consumers towards a model of perpetual payment, challenging the conventional notion of owning a device. This approach could redefine consumer expectations regarding tech acquisition, prioritizing continuous access to new features over long-term ownership, and perhaps making the transition to new models feel less like a luxury and more like a standard upgrade cycle.
