In the serene Belgian countryside of Damme, a venerable farmhouse has undergone an extraordinary metamorphosis at the hands of Vandeputte Architects. While its exterior maintains a traditional rural aesthetic, the interior, particularly the subterranean level, reveals an unexpected and opulent Parisian-inspired nightclub, offering a stark yet harmonious contrast to its historic facade.
The architectural firm's comprehensive redesign is a remarkable achievement in blending eras. They meticulously reinterpreted the classic farmhouse, situated by a tree-lined canal, infusing it with modern elegance without sacrificing its ancestral character. This balance is evident throughout the property, from vibrant splashes of color in hallways and a teal-washed living area, created with intricate artisanal paint techniques, to the subtle integration of slender bronze and patinated brass details that act as refined bridges between the home's past and present. Preserving the integrity of the original structure, elements such as beamed wooden ceilings and the open kitchen fireplace were largely undisturbed, and existing materials were often restored or reused, minimizing extensive structural alterations.
The kitchen exemplifies this thoughtful renovation, marrying a serene neutral palette with luxurious veined marble. Unconventional details, like alabaster light fixtures, softly curved countertops, and unique half-height curtains, elevate the space beyond the ordinary. The striking interplay between dark walnut custom cabinetry and robust natural stone countertops, meticulously sourced from Italy and Turkey, creates a monolithic effect, seamlessly connecting surfaces and lending a grand yet understated opulence. The home's curated collection of furnishings, featuring iconic pieces from Molteni & C and Edra, alongside bespoke lighting and the client's personal art, further enhances its cohesive and sophisticated interior.
The cellar truly embodies the project's daring vision. Transformed into an exclusive, cabaret-style nightclub, the space is enveloped in a rich, all-consuming red. At its heart, a magnificent bar features a sleek marble counter complemented by high-gloss tropical amara wood. The focal point, however, is a bespoke red sofa by Collett & Victor, designed by Jean-Philippe Demeyer, which perfectly captures the glamorous and romantic spirit of 1920s Paris. Descending into this underground realm transports one into an entirely different time and place, where history and contemporary luxury converge in an unforgettable experience.
