Chanel Reinforces Support for Centre Pompidou Amidst Major Renovation

The Centre Pompidou in Paris has announced a significant extension of its collaboration with the luxury fashion house Chanel, marking a pivotal moment for the esteemed cultural institution.

This renewed five-year agreement underscores Chanel's commitment to supporting the arts, building upon a partnership initiated in 2019. Previously, Chanel facilitated the museum's acquisition of 21 pieces by 15 contemporary Chinese artists, including Alice Chen, Chen Wei, Cui Jie, Hu Xioyuan, and Lu Yang, and sponsored the related exhibition, "China: A New Generation of Artists." This extended investment is poised to enhance the museum's initiatives in accessibility, scholarly research, and the safeguarding of public knowledge, ensuring its resources remain available for future artists, students, thinkers, and the wider public.

Yana Peel, Chanel's President of Arts, Culture, and Heritage, lauded the Centre Pompidou as a cornerstone institution in France and a vital global hub for intellectual exchange. She emphasized that the partnership is crucial for sustaining the museum's long-term vitality. The Centre Pompidou is currently undergoing a substantial renovation, estimated at over $500 million, necessitating its closure until 2030. This extensive project involves critical upkeep of its distinctive "inside-out" architecture, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. Key aspects of the renovation also include relocating Constantin Brancusi's former studio, now known as the Brancusi Pavilion, into the main museum complex, and a comprehensive reinstallation of its art collection. The Brancusi Pavilion will eventually house the Kandinsky Library and the museum's archives.
