Dinosaur Jr. Unveils New Album "There Near" and Extensive Tour Dates

Iconic indie rock trio Dinosaur Jr., comprising J Mascis, Murph, and Lou Barlow, has exciting news for fans: a brand-new album titled "There Near" is on the horizon. This eagerly anticipated release, scheduled for August 28 under the Jagjaguwar label, marks their first studio effort since 2021's "Sweep Into Space." Alongside the album announcement, the band has revealed an extensive tour itinerary. The latter half of their 2026 tour will feature performances with the acclaimed Detroit indie rocker, Stef Chura, promising a dynamic concert experience for audiences across various cities. The lead single from the upcoming album, "Several Got Away," has already been released, offering a taste of what's to come.

Frontman J Mascis provided insight into his songwriting philosophy, noting that he often avoids overly dissecting the meaning of his songs during the creation process. Instead, he prefers to allow the meaning to emerge naturally over time, integrating lyrics that resonate with his current interests and readings, rather than adhering to strict thematic constraints. Mascis also playfully questioned the modern trend of readily available lyrics on streaming platforms like Spotify, suggesting it detracts from the spontaneous discovery and interpretation of a song's narrative. Earlier this year, Mascis collaborated with Mike Watt on a split 7-inch, where they exchanged cover songs, further showcasing his diverse musical endeavors.

Anticipation Builds for "There Near"

Dinosaur Jr. has officially revealed details surrounding their latest studio album, "There Near," slated for an August 28 release through Jagjaguwar. This forthcoming record will serve as the successor to their well-received 2021 offering, "Sweep Into Space." Fans have already been treated to a preview of the album with the release of its lead single, "Several Got Away," which sets the tone for the new collection of tracks. The album features a total of eleven songs, including titles such as "No Friends," "Everything At Once," and "Walk Me Back," promising a diverse and engaging listening experience from the veteran rock outfit.

J Mascis, the band's principal songwriter, shared his unique perspective on crafting new material. He emphasized an intuitive, less analytical approach to songwriting, where the meaning of a track often unfolds organically rather than being predetermined. Mascis explained that his lyrical choices are frequently influenced by whatever esoteric literature or subjects he is engaging with at the time, underscoring a free-flowing, unburdened creative process. He also humorously expressed a preference for listeners to discover song meanings themselves, gently critiquing the instant availability of lyrics on platforms, which, in his view, can diminish the element of mystery and individual interpretation inherent in music.

Extensive Tour Plans Announced, Featuring Stef Chura

In conjunction with their new album, Dinosaur Jr. has outlined an extensive tour schedule, with the latter half of their 2026 dates featuring special guest Stef Chura. The tour kicks off in July, with performances across various cities, including Kingston, NY, New Haven, CT, and Atlanta, GA, often co-headlining with Band of Horses for the initial leg. This comprehensive series of concerts will provide fans with numerous opportunities to experience the band's distinctive sound live, showcasing material from their new album "There Near" as well as their classic hits.

The second, highly anticipated leg of the tour is set to commence in October, bringing Dinosaur Jr. to the West Coast and other regions. These performances, featuring Stef Chura, will include stops in Las Vegas, NV, Los Angeles, CA, San Francisco, CA, and Seattle, WA, before extending to cities like Dallas, TX, Houston, TX, and New Orleans, LA in November. This widespread tour ensures that a broad audience will have the chance to witness Dinosaur Jr.'s electrifying live show, bolstered by the addition of Stef Chura's compelling indie rock presence, creating a memorable concert experience for all attendees.
