Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for $15 Million Over Unauthorized Photo Use on TV Packaging

Singer Dua Lipa has initiated a substantial legal claim against Samsung, seeking $15 million, after discovering her personal, copyrighted photograph was allegedly used without authorization on the packaging of the company’s televisions.
This legal action, filed in a California federal court, asserts that Samsung benefited commercially from the unauthorized display of Lipa's image on its TV boxes, thereby creating a false impression of her endorsement. The photograph in question, titled “Dua Lipa — Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” is officially registered with the United States Copyright Office, confirming Lipa's ownership and rights. The artist became aware of the infringement last June when fans began circulating images of the "Dua Lipa TV Box" on social media, leading to public comments suggesting her approval of the product.
Following the discovery, Lipa’s representatives demanded Samsung cease the use of the photograph. However, court documents indicate Samsung's response was deemed "dismissive and callous," as the company allegedly declined to comply with the requests. The lawsuit highlights this as a deliberate act of copyright and trademark infringement, as well as a violation of Lipa's publicity rights, designed to leverage her widespread success for Samsung's commercial gain. The unauthorized use, according to the complaint, has significantly diminished Lipa’s brand identity and commercial value by falsely implying her association and endorsement of Samsung's television products.
This case underscores the critical importance of intellectual property rights and the protection of an artist's image in commercial contexts. It sends a clear message to corporations regarding the severe legal and financial repercussions of using copyrighted material without explicit permission, emphasizing the need for ethical conduct and respect for creative ownership.
