My personal journey with the Leica SL2s began with its purchase, and to this day, it serves as my primary photographic instrument. With its successor, the SL3s, now on the market, and the ripple effects of semiconductor shortages impacting the used camera market, I offer my insights into whether the SL2s retains its efficacy and value in 2026. Was this an astute acquisition?

Since acquiring my Leica SL2s in March 2021, this camera has been an integral part of my professional endeavors. Over time, it has progressively enhanced its capabilities alongside my evolving needs. Significant improvements and additions to its functionality include:

• Expanded lens compatibility: The introduction of L-mount lenses from Viltrox, alongside my existing collection of Sigma, Panasonic LUMIX, and other brands like TTArtisan, has broadened its versatility.
• Enhanced sensor protection: I've installed an in-camera filter to shield the sensor from dust and other environmental elements.
• Personalized aesthetic and protection: A custom skin now adorns the camera body, not only protecting it but also giving it a unique identity.
• Regular firmware updates: These have consistently improved performance and added new features.
• Seamless integration with Leica Fotos app: The inclusion of Leica looks within the app simplifies the application of desired visual styles.

During its tenure, the camera required a single service visit due to issues with the hot shoe and a slight decline in autofocus performance. This was a direct result of pushing the camera far beyond the limits I would typically impose on comparable models from Sony, Canon, or Nikon. Despite this rigorous use, the SL2s has proven remarkably resilient and has continued to function reliably.

Mastering Photography Beyond Automation: The Leica SL2s Approach to Image Creation

With the Leica SL2s, my focus is not on the limitations of features like animal autofocus. Instead, I meticulously select my focus points, ensuring I achieve the desired outcome. The camera’s design eschews an excessive reliance on technology, allowing the photographer to concentrate on the art of image creation. This intentional simplicity is something I deeply appreciate.

I anticipate that my next statement may provoke some debate among tech-focused individuals who claim to be photographers: I have never once been commissioned for a paid assignment that involved photographing animals instead of humans. The SL2s excels in photojournalism, and by embracing a more traditional photographic approach, it delivers exceptional results.

Beyond the Hype: Prioritizing Reliability and Longevity in Camera Investment

This perspective might challenge conventional thinking. Many wonder why one wouldn't invest in more affordable cameras equipped with superior technology. My view, however, is the opposite: why not invest in a camera that simplifies your workflow, offers unparalleled durability, and guarantees repair services even after it's been discontinued? Having a camera that can withstand almost any condition allows me to depend on my own photographic expertise to create exceptional images, rather than relying solely on the camera's automated capabilities.

Nevertheless, there are certain functionalities I still wish Leica had incorporated. For instance, I would appreciate the ability to set the 28mm f2 APO SL lens to focus at a specific distance, such as six feet, and then lock that focus, similar to zone focusing. This feature is currently unavailable on the SL2s, and the reason for its absence remains a mystery to me.

Additionally, I continue to hope for Leica to embrace multiple exposure capabilities, a feature that has yet to be implemented.

The Unwavering Performance of the Leica SL2s: A Personal Account of its Professional Impact

While I haven't secured any paid photography assignments yet in 2026, last year was bustling with them, and the SL2s was my constant companion, performing exceptionally well on nearly every occasion. Fundamentally, the images it produces are comparable to what many other cameras on the market could achieve. However, the true distinction of the SL2s lies in its unwavering reliability. This reliability has proven more valuable for my work here at The Phoblographer than for the paid assignments I undertake as an independent photographer, which still contribute to my taxable income.

There have been moments when I considered acquiring a Q3 or another model. Yet, I harbor no regrets about my decision. This camera has been a steadfast partner for a considerable duration and holds the record for being the longest-serving camera in my possession. While I also frequently utilize my Sony a7R III, I generally find Sony's ergonomics and operational philosophy less appealing. Upgrading to their newer models, with the notable exception of the A1 II, doesn't particularly tempt me. Even the A1 II, despite its advancements, lacks Leica's intrinsic reliability and still retains a somewhat "PlayStation" feel, even as it increasingly embodies the spirit of a classic Minolta camera.

Furthermore, it’s worth highlighting additional attributes. The camera’s metallic construction offers a tangible sense of its identity. Its battery life is outstanding, surpassing that of most contemporary mirrorless cameras. Moreover, its menu interface is arguably more intuitive than many on the market, though I do wish for full touch functionality across the entire system.

Balancing Tradition and Innovation: Why the Leica SL2s Remains a Top Choice for Stills Photographers

Ultimately, the Leica SL2s offers a professional photographic experience akin to the Sony a9 II, but encased in a significantly more robust and durable body, albeit without advanced animal detection features. For a photographer dedicated to capturing still images, this design philosophy lends it a distinctly professional feel.

However, if faced with the choice again, I would not repurchase this specific camera. The Panasonic LUMIX S1R II, with its higher megapixel count, multiple exposure RAW capabilities, and Real Time LUT functionality, now better serves my needs. Consequently, the LUMIX S1R II often accompanies my Leica SL2s as my primary camera. I wish the SL3 had embraced this forward-thinking approach more fully. Ultimately, my true aspiration is to own a Leica M11-D.
