Faro Santander to Open with Gelman Collection, Sparking Debate on Mexican Art Repatriation

The Banco Santander Foundation is preparing to unveil its new artistic hub, Faro Santander, on September 8th, featuring three distinct exhibitions. This includes a retrospective dedicated to Leonora Carrington, an inaugural showcase of the Banco Santander's previously unexhibited collection of masterworks, and a special presentation titled “Modern Mexico in the Gelman Santander Collection.” The latter has attracted significant attention due to the controversial ownership transfer of 160 pieces from the esteemed Gelman Collection to the foundation in January, sparking widespread debate about the collection's presence outside Mexico.

The Gelman Collection is renowned for its pivotal role in showcasing Mexican modernism, encompassing masterpieces by celebrated figures like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Many of these works are legally designated as “artistic monuments” in Mexico, which restricts their permanent relocation from the country. Over two hundred Mexican artists and cultural professionals have voiced their strong disapproval through an open letter, criticizing the Mexican government for its perceived misstep in allowing these works to leave the nation rather than integrating them into the national patrimony, despite earlier statements from the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura citing the prohibitive cost of acquiring the collection.

In response to the public outcry, the Santander Foundation has affirmed that it has no intentions of permanently removing these art pieces from their country of origin. As a gesture of goodwill, the foundation previously arranged an exhibition in Mexico City, showcasing a segment of the Gelman Collection. The upcoming exhibition at Faro Santander, curated by Marisol Argüelles, promises a fresh perspective on the collection, complemented by an extensive display of photography and a rich program of live events. These initiatives aim to deepen understanding and appreciation of Mexican modernity, highlighting key artists and cultural narratives, and will remain on view until January 10, 2027. Additionally, the new Faro Santander, situated in the bank's extensively renovated former headquarters, will feature a dedicated floor for the Banco Santander's own collection, offering the public a rare glimpse into centuries of Western art history, from Old Masters to contemporary Spanish artists.
