Fernando Botero's Major London Exhibition Set for October 2026

Opera Gallery London is preparing to host a major solo exhibition dedicated to the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero, set to commence on October 12, 2026. Titled "Fernando Botero: In Praise of an Amplified World," this event will be the first comprehensive display of Botero's work in the British capital in over a decade. The exhibition will run until November 12, coinciding with Frieze London, and will feature a diverse collection of his paintings, drawings, and sculptures, encompassing works from the mid-1960s up to his final year in 2023.

The exhibition, designed with scenography by Cécile Degos, aims to challenge the common interpretation of Botero's characteristic style as mere caricature. Instead, it posits that volume itself was the central theme of his artistic practice. The gallery emphasizes that Botero's method involved "amplifying" his subjects through proportional shifts, thereby intensifying their physical presence rather than simply enlarging them. This unique approach reportedly originated from a pivotal moment in 1957 when he discovered that reducing the rosette of a mandolin made its body appear significantly larger, a revelation he credited with shaping his entire visual lexicon. Furthermore, the show highlights Botero's continuous engagement with art history, tracing influences from masters like Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, Piero della Francesca, and Pablo Picasso, whose works he studied and copied early in his career at the Museo del Prado.

Gilles Dyan, founder of Opera Gallery, remarked on Botero's instantly recognizable yet profoundly nuanced visual language, stating that the exhibition will underscore the remarkable consistency and diverse achievements of his artistic vision over six decades. Following his passing, Botero's market has experienced substantial growth, with his auction sales reaching a record high of $53.8 million in 2024. This London show follows a recent exhibition, "Botero in New York," at Sotheby's Breuer building, which explored how his time in Greenwich Village in the late 1950s and '60s influenced the development of his distinctive voluptuous and flattened aesthetic, known as Boterismo.
