Flávia Almeida Appointed New President of MASP
The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), a globally recognized cultural institution situated in Brazil's largest city, has elevated Flávia Almeida from her previous role as vice-president to the esteemed position of president. This transition marks a new chapter for the museum, succeeding the impactful 12-year tenure of Heitor Martins. Almeida brings a wealth of experience from the corporate sector, holding a business administration degree and an MBA from Harvard University. Her extensive professional background includes board memberships at the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, where she previously served as director, and her current role as chair of the board at São Paulo’s Instituto Tomie Ohtake. She has also held leadership positions at various public and private enterprises, notably including McKinsey & Company.
This significant leadership change at MASP occurs shortly after the grand opening of a new 14-story facility, a project costing $43.5 million that dramatically expanded the museum's exhibition area by 66 percent. This expansion, detailed in a March 2025 report, has effectively doubled MASP's total footprint, providing an additional 235,300 square feet for its collections and exhibitions. The original museum structure has been respectfully renamed in honor of Bo Bardi, while the new building bears the name of Pietro Maria Bardi, the institution's inaugural artistic director and husband to the architect. Adriano Pedroso, a highly regarded curator at MASP and organizer of the 2024 Venice Biennale, expressed admiration for the new building's design, emphasizing its harmonious integration with the existing iconic Lina Bo Bardi structure rather than attempting to overshadow it.
