Former Marlborough Gallery Chelsea Location Acquired for $7.5 Million

A New Chapter for a Renowned Art Space
The Transition of a Landmark Gallery
The former New York flagship location of Marlborough Gallery, a prominent institution that played a significant role in the global art scene for nearly eighty years, has been successfully sold. Following its closure in 2024, the Chelsea space, known for its grand scale and adaptability, has transitioned to new ownership.
Gazelli Art House Expands Its Global Presence
Gazelli Art House, an international gallery with existing establishments in London and Baku, Azerbaijan, has finalized the purchase of the former Marlborough premises. The transaction, valued at $7.5 million, was facilitated by Jeffrey Zoldan and Roger Gillen of Brown Harris Stevens, who acted as brokers for the seller.
The End of an Era for Marlborough
This sale signifies another step in the dissolution of Marlborough's extensive legacy. The gallery, which operated for almost eight decades, announced in April 2024 its decision to discontinue artist representation, close its exhibition programs, and begin liquidating its substantial art inventory, reportedly worth around $250 million. This decision followed years of financial challenges and a publicized internal family dispute.
Premier Exhibition Facilities in Chelsea
Situated within the Chelsea Arts Tower, the newly acquired property spans 9,228 square feet across its first and second floors. The space is meticulously designed to accommodate large-scale contemporary artworks, boasting impressive 18-foot ceilings, a street-level garage door for effortless art handling of pieces up to 14 feet tall, rare curb-cut access, and an expansive 1,250-square-foot private terrace on the second floor.
A Strategic Location in the Art World's Heart
The building's prime location in Chelsea's bustling gallery district is shared with various commercial tenants and notable figures, including fashion icon Calvin Klein. This central position offers Gazelli Art House unparalleled access to a dynamic art-loving audience and a vibrant artistic community.
Gazelli Art House's Vision for the Future
For Gazelli Art House, founded by Mila Askarova in London in 2010, this acquisition provides a permanent and significant base in the global art capital. The gallery, renowned for its program encompassing contemporary art and digital media, will now strengthen its international footprint and influence, building on its success in London and Baku.
The Historical Context of the Chelsea Move
The address itself carries considerable historical weight for the art world. Marlborough had previously relocated its New York operations to Chelsea from Midtown as part of a broader strategy to consolidate its business. However, these plans were ultimately overshadowed by corporate conflicts, legal battles among family members and executives, and declining financial performance, which collectively led to the gallery's eventual closure after nearly 80 years of operation.
