Fundación Kahlo Establishes a $50,000 Award for Emerging Mexican Artists

The Fundación Kahlo, a New York-based non-profit founded by the relatives of the renowned painter Frida Kahlo, recently announced the creation of a significant new award to uplift emerging artists from Mexico.

This initiative, known as the Kahlo Art Prize, will be awarded every two years and includes a $50,000 grant. The auction house Phillips is providing the funding. In addition to the financial support, the prize winner will have the chance to display their creations at the newly inaugurated Museo Casa Kahlo in Mexico City. Mara Romeo Kahlo, Frida Kahlo's grandniece and the president of the Fundación Kahlo, emphasized that the prize embodies Frida's dedication to supporting fellow artists, echoing the sentiment of "more love, more family, more Mexico."

Miety Heiden, chairman of private sales at Phillips, highlighted Frida Kahlo's enduring legacy and her continued influence on artistic dialogue. He expressed Phillips's commitment to creating a platform for Mexican artists at pivotal stages in their careers through this collaboration with the Fundación Kahlo. The application process for the prize will begin in November, with eligibility restricted to Mexican nationals. For its initial year, the award will specifically recognize two-dimensional art. Magalí Arriola, former director of Mexico City's Museo Tamayo, will head the jury, which is expected to select a winner whose projects often explore the intersection of art and politics. The recipient of the first Kahlo Art Prize will be revealed on July 6, 2027, coinciding with what would have been Frida Kahlo's 120th birthday, during a ceremony at the Museo Casa Kahlo. Rick Miramontez, chairman of the Fundación Kahlo, affirmed that the prize seeks to honor Frida's belief in expressing one's truth through art, thereby investing in the future generation of Mexican voices who will shape cultural conversations with their bold and original work.
