Independent 20th Century Relocates to Sotheby's Breuer Building, Expanding Its Vision
The Independent 20th Century art fair, established in 2022 at the Battery Maritime Building, is undergoing a significant transformation by moving its upcoming fifth edition to the iconic Marcel Breuer building, now home to Sotheby's global headquarters. This strategic relocation uptown marks a new chapter for the fair, which will take place from September 24–27, showcasing 56 exhibitors and highlighting over 130 artists from across the 20th century. Fair founder Elizabeth Dee views this move as more than just a change of address; it represents a "rebirth of a new concept."
The move to the Breuer building provides ample space for considerable growth, allowing Independent 20th Century to nearly double in size compared to previous iterations. This expansion facilitates not only a larger number of galleries but also an enriched program of discussions, performances, and special events. Dee emphasizes that this increased concentration of galleries and programming will create a vibrant, engaging atmosphere, akin to a "happening" from the 20th century brought into a contemporary context, fostering a deeper immersion into the art world's fabric focused on this particular historical period.
The Breuer building, with its rich history as a former home to the Whitney Museum and the Met Breuer before Sotheby's occupancy, offers an ideal setting for the fair's curatorial emphasis on overlooked histories, rediscoveries, and alternative interpretations of the 20th-century canon.
