JR Transforms Paris's Pont Neuf into a Subterranean Art Experience Honoring Christo and Jeanne-Claude

A striking new large-scale art installation by French artist JR is currently being assembled, poised to metamorphose Paris's historic Pont Neuf into an immersive cavern this summer. This monumental piece, named La Caverne du Pont Neuf (2026), re-envisions the venerable bridge as an subterranean grotto carved from the very limestone that shaped both the bridge and numerous Parisian structures. This endeavor by the renowned photographer and street artist serves as a profound homage to the groundbreaking work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, specifically their celebrated 1985 project, The Pont Neuf Wrapped. The installation will be accessible to the public day and night from June 6th to June 28th, offering a unique urban art experience.
Christo, the Bulgarian-born installation artist, alongside his wife and artistic partner, the Moroccan artist Jeanne-Claude, famously draped the Pont Neuf and its lampposts in 1985 with a vast expanse of sand-colored woven polyamide fabric for their The Pont Neuf Wrapped project. JR's current installation similarly employs printed fabrics, incorporating an inflatable framework that draws inspiration from both realized and conceptualized projects by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, such as Air Package on a Ceiling, which is slated for exhibition at Gagosian in London later this month. This artistic dialogue between past and present highlights a shared vision of transforming public spaces and challenging conventional perspectives.
JR articulated his artistic intent, stating, "My conception for this undertaking is deeply rooted in the past and present narratives of this emblematic crossing. I hold in high esteem the legacy of Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and I resonate with their conviction that art's purpose is to stimulate contemplation, to urge us to question our familiar surroundings. The dialogue ignited by a public art project holds as much significance as its physical realization. Art, for me, is a process of metamorphosis, a means of reorienting our perception of the world. Through the fantastical vision of La Caverne du Pont Neuf, this is the possibility I aspire to create in the heart of Paris." This installation represents the culmination of JR's artistic exploration into themes of detachment and societal isolation, a journey initiated in 2020 during the early stages of the global pandemic. In 2023, the artist presented Retour à la Caverne (Return to the Cave) on the d of the Palais Garnier in Paris, an analogous cavernous evocation referencing Plato's allegory, brought to life by a performance featuring over 150 dancers. This earlier work served as a precursor to his current project, which seeks to encourage visitors to transcend "blindness and isolationism in favor of clarity, unity, and harmony among all," as noted in a press release. Other notable works in JR's series involving public buildings include La Ferita (2021) in Florence, Punto di Fuga (2021) in Rome, and La Nascita (2024) in Milan.
Within the depths of the cavern, a distinctive auditory experience, crafted by Thomas Bangalter, formerly of Daft Punk, will evoke the resonance of this immense space. Concurrently with this grand installation, Perrotin's gallery in the Marais will host an exhibition of new works by JR titled "Les esquisses de la Caverne," running from June 5th to July 25th. This complementary exhibition will feature preliminary sketches, photographs, and collages that formed the conceptual bedrock for the colossal installation. Furthermore, a one-hour documentary directed by Vincent Lorca, chronicling the project, is scheduled for broadcast on France TV in mid-June.
The transformation of the Pont Neuf by JR is more than a temporary art installation; it is an invitation to engage with history, art, and community. By reimagining a familiar landmark, JR encourages us to look beyond the surface, to explore hidden narratives, and to find shared meaning in public spaces. This project exemplifies art's power to inspire reflection, spark dialogue, and foster a sense of collective wonder, ultimately enriching our understanding of both our surroundings and ourselves.
