Julian Lage Returns to Bob Dylan's Tour Amidst Guitarist Shake-Ups

The summer leg of Bob Dylan's Never Ending Tour has been marked by ongoing shifts in his band's guitar lineup. The latest development saw the unexpected return of Julian Lage and the debut of Joel Paterson, adding new layers to the unfolding musical saga.

Dylan's Ever-Evolving Stage: A Whirlwind of Guitarists

Julian Lage's Unexpected Comeback

On July 6, at the Mystic Lake Amphitheater in Shakopee, Minnesota, the stage witnessed a notable event: Julian Lage, a guitarist who had been absent for the previous five concerts, made his reappearance. He was joined by Joel Paterson, a new addition to the ensemble, creating a dynamic duo on guitars for Bob Dylan's performance.

The Guitarist Carousel: A Summer of Changes

Lage's last appearance with Dylan was on June 26 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he shared the guitar spotlight with Bob Britt. However, Lage departed for a scheduled event in New York City, which coincided with Dylan's next show in Austin. This left Britt as the sole guitarist after Doug Lancio's earlier, unexplained departure. The situation further evolved when Britt also left the band, announcing his departure on social media with a "Sayonara Bobby" post.

Joel Paterson's Solo Debut and the Lean Lineup

The Austin concert on June 29 presented a new challenge, with only bassist Tony Garnier and drummer Anton Fig remaining in Dylan's band. Joel Paterson, a blues and jazz guitarist from Chicago, stepped in, performing his inaugural show with Dylan's band without the support of another guitarist. He delivered a remarkable performance, leading to a stripped-down lineup of Paterson, Garnier, and Fig for the subsequent four shows.

A Harmonious Collaboration: Lage and Paterson Unite

The July 6 show in Shakopee was the first time Paterson shared guitar duties with another musician in Dylan's band. Early fan reports indicated a seamless collaboration between Lage and Paterson, suggesting a promising musical chemistry. Full fan recordings of the concert quickly emerged online, allowing enthusiasts to experience their combined artistry firsthand.

Consistent Setlist Amidst Shifting Personnel

Despite the frequent changes in guitarists, Dylan's setlist has largely remained stable in recent weeks. A notable alteration is the removal of "All Along the Watchtower," a song widely recognized by casual fans. Dylan has predominantly concluded recent shows with "I Shall Be Released," occasionally reverting to "Every Grain of Sand."

Future Tour Uncertainties and Anticipation

Dylan's U.S. tour dates extend through August 1. However, Lage has upcoming solo concerts in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on July 11 and San Biagio, Italy, on July 12, making his presence at Dylan's July 12 Pittsburgh show unlikely. It is also probable he will miss several other performances. Further complications arise in October as Dylan tours Europe while Lage has commitments across North America. This raises questions about who will fill the guitar role during these periods. Dylan is known for not announcing personnel changes in advance, and those close to him tend to remain silent, leaving fans to anticipate the next developments.
