Leading Photography Exhibitions of Summer 2026

As summer approaches, a captivating selection of photographic exhibitions across various international venues is set to draw art enthusiasts. These showcases offer a rich tapestry of styles and narratives, ranging from avant-garde fashion photography to profound explorations of identity and historical moments. This season’s must-see events span Paris, Arles, New York, Milwaukee, Chicago, Queens, Cambridge, Hamburg, and Spain, each presenting a unique perspective through the lens of remarkable artists.

Among the highlights are Camille Vivier's surrealistic fashion work in Paris, celebrated for its unique blend of fantasy and myth, marking her museum debut. Concurrently, Les Rencontres d’Arles continues its long-standing tradition with a diverse program, including a historical look at Ghana's independence through photography and Paul Kodjo's innovative photo-romans. New York City features "Yves Saint Laurent and Photography" at the International Center of Photography, revealing the couturier’s significant influence on twentieth-century image-makers and their iconic collaborations. Widline Cadet’s solo exhibition in Milwaukee delves into Black diasporic life through meticulously staged scenes and a 'living archive,' while in Chicago, an exhibition on Lucas Samaras celebrates his pioneering self-portraiture and boundary-pushing artistic practices.

Further enriching the summer schedule is "Greater New York 2026" at MoMA PS1 in Queens, highlighting fifty-three artists with a strong focus on photography, including Devlin Claro's vibrant portrayals of Queens life. In Cambridge, the MIT Museum hosts a retrospective of Harold Edgerton, whose groundbreaking high-speed photography transformed our perception of motion and influenced various fields. The Triennial of Photography Hamburg, guided by Mark Sealy, explores themes of love and human connection through a transnational group of photographers, coinciding with a tribute to its founder, F. C. Gundlach, and his fashion photography. Lastly, Paolo Roversi's career survey in Spain, titled "Doubts," reflects on uncertainty as a wellspring of creativity, showcasing his painterly approach developed through decades of collaborations with leading fashion houses.

These exhibitions collectively offer a dynamic and thought-provoking experience, celebrating photography's power to document, interpret, and inspire. They invite viewers to engage with diverse cultural narratives, artistic innovations, and the enduring impact of visual storytelling, fostering a deeper appreciation for the art form and its continuous evolution.
