Leven Kali: From Drummer Boy to R&B Maverick with 'LK99'

Leven Kali, the multi-talented musician, has unveiled his latest album, 'LK99', marking a significant phase in his artistic development. The record showcases his versatility as a singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, delving into themes of love and modern consumerism. This release is particularly notable as it follows a period of growth and collaboration for Kali, who previously worked with industry giants while also grappling with the challenges of the music business. 'LK99' is not just an album; it's a testament to his journey, embracing imperfections and encouraging listeners to find inspiration in raw authenticity.

Kali's musical origins trace back to his early childhood, captured in old camcorder footage where a two-year-old Leven, full of joy, playfully bangs on a toy drum set. His mother's enthusiastic encouragement provided an early soundtrack to his nascent drumming, a memory he cherishes, even holding onto the drumstick bag from that time. Fast forward to his teenage years, music took a backseat to golf, a sport that earned him a Division I scholarship at UC Riverside. However, the allure of music proved too strong to resist. In 2015, while still enrolled, Kali reignited his passion through SoundCloud, creating music in his dorm room that quickly garnered attention from prominent figures like Kanye West and Travis Scott.

The intervening six years between his previous albums, 'Low Tide' (2019) and 'HIGHTIDE' (2020), were a crucible of experience. Kali navigated the demanding schedule of balancing college and studio work, eventually making the pivotal decision to dedicate himself entirely to music. This period saw him contributing his songwriting talents to celebrated artists such as Beyoncé and Jazmine Sullivan, an experience that honed his ability to discern irreplaceable musical moments from those requiring meticulous refinement. He recounts the unexpected ease of collaborating with artists like Jazmine Sullivan, whose vocal contributions transformed his beats.

The creation of 'LK99' was a deeply personal endeavor for Kali, who produced approximately 95% of the album himself. He describes the process as 'clean', opting to forgo extensive collaborations for this particular project, though he hints at future deluxe versions featuring other artists. The album opens with 'Breathe!', an energetic track that transitions into a funk-infused interlude reminiscent of Parliament Funkadelic, before settling into the neo-jazz rhythms of 'Remedy', evoking the serene sounds of Sade. Kali's vocal versatility is a highlight, as he manipulates his pitch to add layers of texture, from a deep, cautionary tone on 'Stars, Stripes and Credit Card Swipes' to a sweet, soaring voice on the album closer 'Without You'. He characterizes this diverse sonic landscape as simply 'soul'.

A unique aspect of 'LK99' is Kali's deliberate inclusion of 'mistakes' – intentionally flat and sharp notes. This artistic choice serves as a powerful statement in an era dominated by AI-driven perfection. He hopes these subtle imperfections will inspire listeners to embrace their authentic selves and find beauty in genuine human expression. Kali’s journey, from a childhood drummer to a respected artist collaborating with icons and now releasing a self-produced album, embodies a continuous evolution, marked by resilience, introspection, and an unwavering commitment to his unique artistic vision.
