The Mountain Goats Unveil New Album 'Days' with Eclectic Tracklist and Extensive Tour

The indie-folk band, The Mountain Goats, has officially unveiled their latest album, 'Days,' arriving shortly after their November release, 'Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan.' This new collection features an array of uniquely titled songs, such as 'Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds,' setting a distinctive tone for the record. The announcement is coupled with news of a comprehensive tour schedule, spanning both North America and Europe, offering fans numerous opportunities to experience their new material live.
John Darnielle, the creative force behind The Mountain Goats, shared insights into the album's genesis. Initially conceived as 'Grunges,' a successor to their 2017 album 'Goths,' the project took shape following a humorous remark on social media about a song titled 'Contemplating Pearl Jam in the Carolina Dawn.' Darnielle revealed that the two-week absence of his wife for a hockey residency provided the solitude needed for these songs to emerge. The album's lyrical themes delve into the decades of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, exploring the concept of accumulating days, some of which become clearer with retrospect, while others blur into pleasant or unsettling memories. Despite the predominantly major keys used, Darnielle playfully warns listeners not to be deceived, hinting at deeper complexities within the seemingly upbeat melodies.
The recording of 'Days' took place at Sear Sound in Manhattan, with John Congleton at the helm as producer. The band's current lineup includes John Darnielle, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster, notably without Peter Hughes, who departed in 2024 after three decades. The album also features contributions from additional musicians, such as bassist and French horn player Rob Jost, harpist Mikaela Davis, and various backing vocalists, enriching the band's signature sound. The diverse tracklist further highlights the band's eclectic approach, with titles ranging from 'Song for Layne Staley' to 'Hidden Majesty of Later Venom Albums,' promising a rich and varied listening experience.
The extensive tour itinerary includes performances across a multitude of cities. North American dates encompass locations like Silver Spring, MD, Boston, MA, Nashville, TN, and Morrison, CO, where they will be joined by The Avett Brothers. European stops include Helsinki, Stockholm, Berlin, and London, with many of these shows featuring Craig Finn as a special guest. The tour culminates with multiple dates in New York, NY, at the Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall, providing a grand finale to their global trek.
This latest offering, 'Days,' not only serves as a testament to The Mountain Goats' prolific artistry but also continues their tradition of crafting narratives that are both personal and universally resonant. The album's thematic exploration of memory and the passage of time, coupled with its diverse musical arrangements and an engaging live tour, solidifies its place as a significant release in their discography.
