New Documentary Celebrates Life and Legacy of Rush Drummer Neil Peart
A forthcoming documentary, titled 'Neil Peart: No One's Disciple,' is set to debut on Canada's CBC network this September 23rd. This feature delves into the life journey of the revered Neil Peart, the iconic drummer and lyricist of the band Rush. The film includes conversations with Rush's foundational members, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, alongside a host of celebrated drummers who discuss Peart's significant impact on their craft.
As part of this cinematic tribute, Lee and Lifeson participated in studio sessions, performing classic Rush compositions with a selection of notable guest percussionists. These included Stewart Copeland from The Police, Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Danny Carey from Tool. While Lee and Lifeson had previously collaborated with Smith and Carey at a tribute event for Taylor Hawkins in 2022, their performance with Copeland marked a new milestone, given his close friendship with Peart.
Neil Peart, widely regarded as one of rock music's most exceptional drummers, succumbed to cancer in 2020. Reflecting on Peart's perspective, Copeland recounted to Rolling Stone in 2020, "He never held himself in as high esteem as others did, but he deeply understood the responsibility of being perceived as the 'God of drums,' which, in truth, was quite a burden." Peart himself shared in 2015, echoing a sentiment from Buddy Rich, that true greatness isn't attained but rather a state of 'goodness' maintained through persistent effort. He concluded, "I've never been fully satisfied with my work, but I continually strive for more. Exactly." Lee and Lifeson continue to honor Peart's memory during their current tour with drummer Anika Nilles, incorporating numerous dedications to him in each performance.
