Nikon Launches Silver Zf-GR1 Grip in Japan

Nikon has officially unveiled a new silver iteration of its highly sought-after Zf-GR1 extension grip, a product that has largely remained exclusive to the Japanese domestic market since its original black version launch. This release, nearly three years following the Nikon Zf camera's debut, caters to a significant demand from photographers seeking to enhance their camera's handling while maintaining its distinctive aesthetic. The grip, known for its premium build and seamless integration, has previously been difficult to acquire outside of Japan, often appearing on secondary markets at inflated prices. The introduction of this stylish silver option is set to excite enthusiasts within Japan, offering a refined accessory for their retro-inspired Zf cameras.

The Zf-GR1 extension grip has a fascinating history of limited availability. For most of its existence, this accessory has been confined to Nikon's Japanese market, making it a prized item for international photographers. The scarcity has led to a bustling online trade, with eBay vendors listing the grip significantly above its recommended retail price. This global interest underscores the grip's desirability among Nikon Zf users. The grip briefly surfaced in the U.S. as a promotional item, bundled with the Zf camera, and even secured an official product page on Nikon USA's website, only to be subsequently archived, confirming its non-availability as a standalone purchase in that region.

The eagerly awaited silver Zf-GR1 grip is scheduled for release in Japanese stores on June 19. Priced at 18,700 yen, approximately $117, it will be directly sold by Nikon, although retailers may set their own prices. Anticipating strong demand, similar to the black version, Nikon will initiate pre-orders on June 10. This strategic launch aims to meet the high expectations from the local market, which values the grip's quality and design harmony with the Zf camera.

The appeal of the Zf-GR1 extends beyond its visual compatibility. Photographers are drawn to its superior construction and the way it complements the Zf's design language. Nikon Japan highlights that the grip not only improves handling but also uses the same artificial leather as the camera body, ensuring a cohesive and integrated look. Furthermore, the grip features a small thumb rest for enhanced ergonomics and practicality. Crafted from lightweight yet robust aluminum, the Zf-GR1 is designed to integrate flawlessly with the Zf without adding unnecessary bulk, providing a stable and comfortable shooting experience. Thoughtful design elements include an unobstructed battery/memory card slot, a built-in tripod screw thread, and an integrated Arca-Swiss-compatible plate, making it a highly functional accessory.

For the time being, the new silver Nikon Zf-GR1 is expected to remain a Japan-exclusive item, with no immediate plans for a U.S. release. This situation means international enthusiasts will likely continue to rely on alternative grip solutions or navigate the complexities of importing the coveted accessory. However, for those within Japan, the upcoming launch offers a fantastic opportunity to acquire a premium grip that perfectly matches the classic style of their Nikon Zf camera.
