Note Design Studio Transforms Flat Mutina Tiles into Sculptural Geometric Bricks

Historically, building materials like sun-dried clay bricks have been instrumental in shaping architectural landscapes for millennia. Their evolution into decorative and structural tiles followed, maintaining their fundamental role as versatile components for constructing walls, floors, facades, and entire architectural styles. Even after thousands of years, designers and artisans continue to discover new ways to innovate with these age-old elements.

Note Design Studio's Cristiano Pigazzini, the Design Manager and a Founding Partner, articulated the inspiration behind the new 'Emisferi' line for Mutina, an Italian tile manufacturer known for its unconventional approach. He explained, "Our initial concept centered on the hemisphere as a fundamental unit—a form so minimal it verges on invisibility, yet when replicated across a surface, it conjures an expansive panorama, establishing equilibrium between positive and negative spaces, presence and absence. Each aspect is intrinsically dependent on the other." Introduced at this month's 3daysofdesign event, this vibrant, geometrically bold building block product elevates Mutina's distinctly graphic aesthetic from two dimensions to three, thereby unlocking a new realm of functionality and application possibilities.

Despite being established two decades ago, Mutina has consistently striven to push the creative boundaries of its primary product and unique expertise. With this fresh, ingeniously re-imagined—essentially extruded—design, the company has made a significant leap into uncharted territory. What typically serves as a decorative surface treatment for structural walls and floors has now become a structural element in its own right, without compromising its artistic integrity. The meticulously glazed terracotta brick is not merely a cube; it features uniformly carved semicircular indentations on opposing sides. This seemingly minor detail makes a profound difference. When arranged in a repeating pattern or assembled to form an impromptu partition, this distinctive formal quality enables fascinating interactions of light and air, allowing them to flow freely. As a base for a table or the framework for a modular shelving system, this unique geometry facilitates adaptability, inviting the integration of other design components. The potential for diverse configurations is as limitless as its range of applications, making the product equally suitable for indoor and outdoor environments. Upon closer examination, the subtly imperfect, non-entirely crystalline glaze becomes evident. This delicate imperfection, both matte and velvety, imparts an unexpected depth to the otherwise monolithic block, creating captivating interplay between light and shadow. Available in Beige, Light Blue, and Brown, 'Emisferi' encourages creative exploration through varied patterns.

This pioneering collaboration between design and manufacturing exemplifies how a fresh perspective can revitalize traditional materials, transforming them into innovative elements that inspire creativity and push the boundaries of functional aesthetics. By embracing imperfection and versatility, 'Emisferi' celebrates the dynamic interplay between form, function, and artistic expression, encouraging a more imaginative approach to design.
