Polar Pro's Luna Ultra ND Filters: A Viable Alternative to Insta360's Scarce Offerings

Insta360's recent introduction of the Luna Ultra camera has been met with enthusiasm, but customers and reviewers alike have encountered significant challenges in acquiring its essential accessories, particularly the neutral density (ND) filter sets. This scarcity has created a prime opportunity for third-party manufacturers to fill the void, with Polar Pro emerging as a prominent contender offering its own range of Luna Ultra-compatible filters.
Despite the Luna Ultra camera itself being relatively available, its specialized ND filters have been difficult to obtain since the product's launch a month ago. Official Insta360 channels and many major retailers, such as B&H Photo, still report these filters as out of stock or without an estimated arrival date in various regions. This persistent supply issue has left many Luna Ultra owners in North America unable to fully utilize their new camera's capabilities, as ND filters are crucial for controlling exposure in bright lighting conditions and achieving desired motion blur effects.
In response to this market gap, Polar Pro is preparing to release its own suite of ND filters and creative filter collections for the Insta360 Luna Ultra by the end of August. These offerings are designed to magnetically attach to the Luna Ultra camera, similar to Insta360's first-party filters. However, Polar Pro differentiates its initial ND filter set by offering stronger light reduction options: ND8, ND32, and ND128, compared to Insta360's ND4, ND16, and ND32. This provides photographers and videographers with greater control over exposure, especially in very bright environments.
Beyond standard ND filters, Polar Pro is expanding its range with several specialized collections. The "Vivid" collection integrates a polarizing filter with ND capabilities, ideal for reducing glare and enhancing color saturation. The "Cine" collection offers full-spectrum infrared filters for unique visual effects, while the "Vybe" collection introduces creative looks like CineBlack 1/4 for smooth highlight rolloff, CineGold 1/4 for warm highlights, and a "Portra" filter designed to evoke the nostalgic aesthetic of Portra film. Although the Portra filter previously drew mixed reactions for full-size lenses, its inclusion in the Luna Ultra lineup highlights Polar Pro's commitment to offering a broad spectrum of creative tools. Priced at a slight premium of $70 per set, compared to Insta360's $60, Polar Pro's diverse and readily available options are poised to become the go-to choice for Luna Ultra users seeking to enhance their footage.
The current situation underscores the importance of accessory availability alongside a camera launch. As Luna Ultra owners in North America continue to face challenges in acquiring essential ND filters from Insta360, Polar Pro's timely market entry with a comprehensive and potentially more accessible range of filter sets could significantly influence user preferences and market share for camera accessories.
