Police Investigate TikToker for Covert Filming with Smart Glasses
A content creator faces police scrutiny for allegedly utilizing Meta smart glasses to clandestinely record hundreds of videos for his TikTok platform. The individual, identified as Scott Margerison, known as E Dobbin on TikTok, is accused of secretly filming members of the public, retail staff, and ferry employees during his journey through Scotland.
Reports indicate that multiple TikTok videos depict Margerison engaging with young women and girls who appear unaware they are being filmed. In these clips, Margerison, hailing from Rochdale, U.K., allegedly makes comments about their physical appearance, relationship status, and vaccination status. Furthermore, another video shows him secretly filming a tour of the bridge of the CalMac ferry Loch Seaforth. Following the discovery of this unauthorized filming, CalMac temporarily suspended public bridge visits pending a comprehensive review. Police Scotland has confirmed receiving complaints and is currently assessing the content to determine if any criminal offenses have occurred. Allegedly, Margerison's footage includes instances of him cursing at strangers, making sexually suggestive remarks about young women, and a controversial interaction with a Sikh shopkeeper where he discusses a plan to "breed out the white race."
This police inquiry follows Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri's, announcement regarding the platform's prohibition of videos filmed with Meta smart glasses that depict harassment of strangers in public spaces. Instagram also deactivated several prominent pickup artist accounts. When questioned by The Independent, TikTok stated its existing community guidelines prohibit harassment and bullying. However, the news outlet reported that numerous videos targeting women who appear unknowingly filmed remain active on the platform, accumulating hundreds of thousands of views. Similar content is also accessible on YouTube, which reiterated its policies against harassment, doxxing, unwanted sexualization, and dangerous or threatening pranks. Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses have consistently raised privacy concerns due to their capacity for covert recording and public harassment. Meta faces increasing competition from Apple, which is reportedly emphasizing privacy features in its upcoming smart glasses, considering versions without photo and video recording capabilities to differentiate its products.
