Posthumous Album 'The Final Painting' by Ed Askew to be Released

Drag City Records has announced the upcoming release of "The Final Painting," a posthumous album by the distinguished cult folk musician and visual artist, Ed Askew. Slated for release on July 31st, this album showcases collaborations with prominent figures such as Bill Callahan and William Tyler. The track "Gray Air-o-Plane" notably features backing vocals from Sharon Van Etten, and a visual accompaniment for the song, featuring Askew's artwork, has been made available.
The creation of "The Final Painting" involved producer Jerry David DeCicca, who previously worked with Askew on his 2013 album, "For the World." DeCicca meticulously crafted the album from demo recordings Askew made in his residence between 2020 and his passing in January 2025. This release follows the reissue of Askew's 1984 album, "Imperfiction," by Drag City in 2011, underscoring the enduring legacy of his unique artistic vision.
Ed Askew's contributions to music and art continue to resonate, even after his lifetime. His work reminds us that true artistic expression transcends physical boundaries, offering timeless pieces that inspire and connect with new audiences across generations. This final collection is a testament to his creative spirit and an invitation for listeners to delve into the profound and often ethereal world he meticulously crafted.
