Rob Hann's Evocative Road Trip Photography

Rob Hann, a photographer with a career spanning over three decades, has developed a distinctive visual language that immortalizes both celebrity figures and the peculiar charm of American landscapes. His extensive travels across the United States, including iconic routes like Arizona's U.S. 89 and Texas's U.S. 90, have allowed him to document the country's unique character. Much like his portraiture of people, Hann's depictions of remote and eccentric locations emphasize their distinctiveness, presence, and the subtle march of time.
His photographic subjects are diverse, encompassing handcrafted road signs, classic architectural structures, and whimsical local sights such as trees adorned with shoes. Hann also captures significant land art, including Nancy Holt’s “Sun Tunnels” in Utah’s Great Basin Desert and Magda Sayeg’s crocheted vintage camper in Marfa. A sense of playful irony often permeates his work, evident in scenes like an “ICY” sign juxtaposed against an arid Californian desert or a vehicle partially submerged in the earth.
Hann acknowledges his artistic intent, stating, “Even though my images often appear straightforward, I enjoy when observers are left with questions, unsure of precisely what they are witnessing.” He finds himself drawn to elements that are amusing, unintentionally comical, or inherently enigmatic. Throughout the majority of his career, Hann relied on an analog Mamiya 7 camera, recently integrating a digital Hasselblad X2D. The Mamiya's limited 10-frame film rolls instilled a disciplined shooting approach, a habit he maintains with digital photography to avoid excessive post-production. He exclusively uses a single fixed lens and, when shooting film, a single film stock.
Despite an initial preference for monochrome imagery, vibrant colors have become a cornerstone of Hann’s photographic practice. He explains that his work for magazines and record companies necessitated color photography, a transition that took him years to master to his satisfaction. Today, the emotional resonance of color, manipulated through various degrees of saturation and warmth, is a vital component of his artistic expression. Hann is currently collaborating with The Artist Edition on his forthcoming book, Wonder Valley, anticipated later this year. His ongoing artistic journey can be followed on Instagram, where he shares updates on his latest endeavors.
