SmallRig's New Backpack Design Raises Questions of Originality

SmallRig recently introduced its Professional Outdoor Backpack (25L) 6521, highlighting its purportedly "innovative" internal divider system, which uses a hook-and-loop mechanism to secure compartments. This claim has drawn attention due to its strong similarity to the Hasselblad Vandra backpack's acclaimed interior design, a system that was lauded for its uniqueness when reviewed earlier this year. Hasselblad's design team had previously emphasized their extensive efforts to create a flexible, customizable storage solution tailored to diverse camera equipment, allowing photographers to adjust layouts easily on location without needing to replace the entire liner.
The Vandra's success stems from its well-executed hook-and-loop system, which provides superior stability for horizontal dividers compared to other lighter alternatives. Its deeper design also accommodates larger cameras with lenses attached, fitting them securely without resting them on their sides. SmallRig's replication of this design, despite touting it as its own innovation, has been described as a direct lift. While Hasselblad confirmed no involvement of SmallRig in the Vandra's original design, manufacturing, or distribution, SmallRig's version not only mirrors the Vandra's core functionality but also introduces several enhancements, such as improved waist and lumbar support, better access to the top compartment, and additional pockets. Furthermore, SmallRig's backpack is priced at $200, significantly less than the Vandra's $469, making the advanced design more accessible to a wider audience, despite Hasselblad's still superior horizontal divider customization.
The rapid adoption of Hasselblad's distinct design by SmallRig, even without a patent infringement, underscores the dynamic and competitive nature of product development in the photography gear industry.
