Tavares Strachan's Extensive Artistic Journey Explored in New Monograph

A recently published monograph from Phaidon offers an in-depth exploration of Tavares Strachan's diverse artistic career. Strachan, a prominent conceptual artist hailing from the Bahamas, is celebrated for his wide-ranging interests and his unique methods of art creation. His works frequently challenge established historical accounts, prompting viewers to reconsider widely accepted narratives. This comprehensive volume chronicles his artistic output over several decades, providing insight into his thought-provoking approach to art.

One of Strachan's notable creations, an encyclopedia from 2018, exemplifies his dedication to uncovering overlooked histories. This 2,400-page book meticulously documents 15,000 entries about individuals, events, and locations that were notably absent from the Encyclopedia Britannica. This artifact, functioning as both a literary work and a sculptural piece, underscores Strachan's consistent effort to question the information we collectively share and consume.

While Strachan's art often critiques colonialism and historical erasure, his vision is firmly grounded in contemporary and future concerns. He frequently incorporates themes of climate change and space exploration into his work. In 2018, he established the Bahamas Aerospace and Sea Exploration Center (BASEC), a scientific research platform. This initiative famously launched a 3U satellite into a three-year orbit around the sun, commemorating Robert Henry Lawrence Jr., the first African-American astronaut.

The release of this monograph coincides with Strachan's exhibition, 'The Day Tomorrow Began,' currently on display at The Pizzuti, a part of the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, until January 3. Strachan believes that creating a book is more than just compiling his projects; it's an active engagement in the enduring tradition of sharing knowledge. He sees a significant spiritual link between presenting his art in a physical space and documenting it on paper.

This new publication serves as an essential guide to understanding the extensive and profound practice of Tavares Strachan, from his critical examinations of history to his forward-thinking engagements with science and the environment, all while emphasizing the enduring power of shared knowledge through artistic expression.
