The Vision: Integrating Indoor and Outdoor Realms
The core concept behind this Vancouver addition was to eliminate the traditional separation between interior rooms and the external landscape. The goal was to extend the living area visually and functionally into the lush surroundings, transforming the home into a sanctuary that resonates with its garden. This approach allows residents to experience nature as an integral part of their daily lives.
Architectural Ingenuity: Crafting a Transparent Transition
Achieving this harmonious blend involved innovative architectural solutions. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels, meticulously aligned with the ground, create an unbroken visual line from inside to out. This design choice required precise construction, including integrated drainage systems and a subtly sloped bluestone terrace to manage rainwater effectively. The use of slender steel frames for the glazing, instead of bulkier aluminum, ensures that the structural elements recede, making the glass appear as an ethereal boundary rather than a solid barrier.
A Nod to Heritage: Modernity in Dialogue with History
The contemporary addition respectfully acknowledges the adjacent 1912 estate, designed by Thomas Hooper. While distinct in its modern aesthetic, the new structure establishes a visual dialogue with the historic home. The dark lines of the steel window frames echo the leaded casements of the original building, creating a contemporary interpretation of a traditional grid pattern. This thoughtful design choice allows the addition to stand as a unique, yet cohesive, relative to its historic counterpart.
Interior Harmony: A Canvas for Nature's Hues
The interior design, a collaborative effort involving Evoke, James McIntyre Interior Design, and the homeowners, features a serene palette of soft whites, warm grays, rich oak flooring, and elegant Calacatta marble. This minimalist backdrop allows the vibrant colors and textures of the garden to become the focal point, infusing the living spaces with natural beauty. A sculptural white staircase adds an artistic flourish to the otherwise understated aesthetic, embodying expressive design within a refined setting. Iconic furniture pieces by renowned designers like Pierre Paulin, Joe Colombo, Vladimir Kagan, and Paul Evans are thoughtfully placed, creating a sophisticated environment that complements the surrounding art and nature.
Exterior Artistry: Sculpting the Garden Experience
The exterior landscape, envisioned by Tasha Sangha of Paul Sangha Creative and brought to life by Fossil Landscape Construction, is an integral part of the home's design. The team preserved the existing mature tree canopy while introducing layers of pastel-hued plants beneath. Pleached Portuguese laurels form a verdant wall in the South Courtyard, contrasting with the bluestone. Wisteria drapes gracefully over the perimeter, and a bronze torso sculpture by Al Stinson adds a classical element to the natural setting. After sunset, strategically placed lighting from Inverlight, Flos, and Bocci illuminates the garden, ensuring that the outdoor beauty remains visible and continues to enrich the indoor experience, preventing the glass from becoming a reflective barrier.
