Wallpaper*'s Grand Celebration at New York Design Week with Hello Human and Public Records

During New York Design Week, Wallpaper* magazine orchestrated a memorable gathering alongside Hello Human, a communications and storytelling platform, and Public Records, a renowned cultural venue in Brooklyn. This event, hailed by many as a highlight of the week, provided a dynamic platform for the creative community to converge. It featured an engaging exhibition of independent designers and artists, complemented by lively music and craft cocktails, transforming the historic space into a vibrant hub of innovation and social interaction.
As dusk descended, Brooklyn’s industrial Gowanus district became the focal point for New York’s creative elite. They flocked to Public Records, an establishment housed within a former ASPCA headquarters from the early 20th century. Attendees immersed themselves in conversation over exquisite mezcal cocktails, generously provided by Rosaluna, a distillery based in Oaxaca. The venue’s tranquil, tree-lined courtyard offered a serene escape, while the main hall pulsed with energy as guests danced to the impeccably curated sound system, cementing the event’s status as a must-attend celebration.
The central attraction of the evening was the Upstairs listening lounge at Public Records. This space featured a specially curated exhibition showcasing the works of 13 independent creators, a collaborative effort between Wallpaper* and Hello Human. Among the highlights were two atmospheric lighting installations by Los Angeles-based studio Ah Um, and the intricate Huipil vase by ALMa Design Studio, a husband-and-wife team whose piece drew inspiration from traditional Mexican indigenous garments. Elena Mahno presented a striking foldable metallic mirror, blending geometric precision with artistic flair, while Kalon Studios unveiled an array of seating and tables crafted from polished steel and stone, demonstrating a fusion of materials and modern design.
The atmosphere in the intimate Upstairs lounge was further enhanced by thoughtfully designed lighting, which included a dramatic timber floor lamp from Brooklyn-based Ladies & Gentlemen Studio. Liyang Zhang contributed a minimalist paper sculpture, reminiscent of a folded garment, adding to the diverse range of works on display. The exhibition also featured contributions from other notable creatives such as Lichen, NoN Studio, oforo, Platform Studio, Thomas Yang, Vy Voi, and Studio Baldo, each adding their unique perspective to the vibrant showcase.
The evening’s captivating artistic display was harmoniously paired with an immersive auditory experience. DJs Francis Harris, co-founder of Public Records, and Dor Levi, curated an eclectic selection of records, setting a sophisticated tone in the Upstairs lounge. As the night progressed, the Sound Room came alive with a techno party, featuring acclaimed DJs Irene Amnes from Berlin and London, Los Angeles artist ONYVAA, and Minimal Wave Records founder Veronika Vasicka, who kept the energy high until the early hours, ensuring a truly unforgettable night for all.
This collaboration between Wallpaper*, Hello Human, and Public Records successfully fused design, music, and social connection, offering a multifaceted experience that captivated attendees. The event not only showcased cutting-edge design but also fostered a sense of community among creative professionals, solidifying its reputation as a significant cultural happening during New York Design Week.
