British Photographer Jo Kearney Crowned Overall Winner at Prestigious World Food Photography Awards
On June 2nd, at the esteemed Mall Galleries in London, the World Food Photography Awards, proudly sponsored by Bimi®, announced British photographer Jo Kearney as its Overall Winner. Kearney received a prize of £5,000 (approximately $6,700) for her profoundly moving photograph, 'A Woman Eats in the Canteen of the Soviet-era Sanatorium.' This captivating image had previously secured victory in the Fortnum & Mason Food at the Table category, setting the stage for its ultimate recognition.
The winning photograph was captured within the Soviet-era Khoja Obi Garm sanatorium, nestled amidst the majestic mountains of Tajikistan. This imposing concrete edifice, renowned for its radon-rich hot springs, remains one of the few active sanatoria of its kind. Here, guests adhere to traditional treatments, including thermal baths and steam therapy, complemented by a diet of wholesome, nourishing meals such as soups, fresh fruits, tea, and authentic Tajik dishes, all meticulously prepared to align with the sanatorium's restorative philosophy. Offering board, lodging, and treatments at an affordable rate of around £33 per day, the sanatorium enjoys immense popularity among those seeking its therapeutic benefits.
Caroline Kenyon, the visionary founder of the World Food Photography Awards, shared her profound admiration for Kearney's work. "There is so much to discern and so much emotion to absorb within this single image," commented Kenyon. "An elderly woman is shown pouring tea for herself – yet, it conveys far more than just that simple act. The profound expression etched upon her weathered face is truly beautiful; it brought tears to my eyes. She sits in solitude, her modest breakfast spread before her, mirroring the arrangement of fruit in the painting adorning the wall behind. Against the muted tones of the landscape visible through the window, the rich crimson hue of the chairs imbues the setting with a sense of grandeur, and despite her humble attire, her dignified posture is undeniably regal. One senses a life rich with experiences, yet she carries herself with unwavering grace."
The awards ceremony, a vibrant confluence of culinary and artistic luminaries, saw renowned chef and food writer Gennaro Contaldo unveil the winners across the competition's 27 categories. Dave Samuels, Brand Director of Tenderstem® Bimi® Broccolini and the headline sponsor, emphasized the power of photography to narrate global food stories. The global judging panel faced the challenging task of evaluating nearly 9,000 entries submitted by photographers from more than 50 countries. A complimentary exhibition showcasing all 203 finalist images will be on display at the Mall Galleries, London, from Wednesday, June 3rd, to Sunday, June 7th. Additionally, a curated selection of images personally chosen by Fortnum & Mason will be exhibited at their iconic Piccadilly store beginning Tuesday, June 9th.
