Yoshitomo Nara's Inaugural Exhibition with David Zwirner Gallery in New York

Japanese contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara is preparing for a significant solo exhibition at David Zwirner in New York, his first since joining the prestigious gallery's roster. This eagerly awaited showcase will span both of the gallery's venues on 19th and 20th Streets in Manhattan's Chelsea district, opening on October 29 and concluding on December 12. This event marks Nara's initial major solo presentation in New York in nearly a decade, following his affiliation with David Zwirner last fall after previously being represented by Pace and Blum galleries. At the time of his move, Nara expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with a gallerist who, despite a different background, shared his generational spirit and an understanding of the subcultures that shaped their era.

The upcoming two-location exhibition will highlight a comprehensive body of work, including fresh paintings and drawings, recent sculptural pieces, and foundational creations personally selected by Nara from his early career. The gallery's press release indicates that the exhibition will bridge foundational works from the 1980s with recent paintings from 2026, showcasing the ongoing evolution of Nara's distinctive artistic expressions. The paintings and drawings will be displayed at the 20th Street space, while the 19th Street location will host 13 of Nara's "sculptural enlargements" from 2024. These enlargements are scaled-up versions of his small bronze casts, coated in white urethane paint to evoke a soft appearance, reminiscent of the snow "monsters" from his childhood, formed by heavy snowfalls.
