House of Rolison: Blending Heritage with Modern Japanese Design in a California Home

Embracing Heritage, Crafting the Future
A Personal Touch: Revitalizing a Family Legacy
Unlike conventional projects that begin with unfamiliar properties, Taylor Hahn's recent undertaking involved transforming her own family's cherished home in Strada Vecchia. This unique commission tasked Hahn and Amanda Leigh, co-principals of House of Rolison, with the delicate balance of preserving the residence's historical significance while ushering it into a new era of design and functionality.
Beyond Walls: Landscape as an Integral Living Space
Perched atop a hillside offering panoramic views from Bel Air to the Pacific Ocean, the most innovative aspect of the home's redesign unfolded not within its walls but across its expansive outdoor terrain. While the interiors received thoughtful attention, the true ingenuity of House of Rolison lay in its topographical intervention: a meticulously crafted network of walking trails. These paths seamlessly connect the pool terrace to the guest quarters, navigating the property's natural contours. This approach contrasts sharply with typical renovations, where landscape often becomes an afterthought, constrained by budgets depleted by interior work. Here, Leigh and Hahn elevated the terrain to the status of an additional room, each trail imbued with its own distinct purpose and sequence.
The Art of Movement: Paths as Rituals
The original structure, a Japanese-inspired sanctuary with expansive ocean-facing glass walls, boasted an architectural philosophy that extended beyond its physical boundaries. The renovation sought to amplify this inherent logic, emphasizing harmonious integration with the outdoors rather than merely preserving existing elements. Consequently, the newly introduced pathways were designed to encourage a deliberate pace, bending gracefully with the land instead of dissecting it. This thoughtful design transforms a simple stroll to the guest house into a serene and contemplative ritual.
Wellness as Design Philosophy: Honest Materials and Intimate Spaces
At the core of the renovation, health and well-being were not treated as mere additions but as foundational principles guiding the home's very essence. Bathrooms were enhanced with integrated benches, while various intimate nooks were strategically placed throughout the residence, offering secluded retreats for contemplation and relaxation. The design team consciously eschewed synthetic and off-gassing materials, opting instead for honest finishes that embrace the passage of time. They meticulously layered tumbled limestone, natural clay plaster, handcrafted marble, and hand-chiseled stone. This selection reflects a belief that surfaces should gracefully bear the marks of wear and tear, developing a soft, enriching patina over the years, rather than resisting change.
Harmonious Furnishings: A Complementary Palette
The interior furnishings echo the same philosophy of thoughtful restraint. A curated selection of pieces from renowned designers such as Bocci, Larose Guyon, Lee Broom, and Olive Ateliers enriches the home's aesthetic without overpowering its inherent tranquility. The result is a renovation that feels less like an overhaul and more like a natural evolution—a home gracefully updated to reflect the contemporary lifestyle of its inhabitants, all while honoring and retaining the cherished qualities that made it invaluable in the first place.
