Curated by Jeremy Freiburger, the RBG's cultural program development lead, "Anchorball" features a striking collection of 18 large-scale sculptures, some reaching heights of 12 feet. These impressive works are strategically placed throughout the gardens, complemented by an innovative augmented reality (AR) experience. This exhibition encourages visitors to embark on an exploratory walk, prompting new ways of interacting with the landscape as physical art, natural beauty, and digital media intertwine.

Sculptural Narratives and Digital Enchantment

Kelleher's site-specific creations draw inspiration from the gardens themselves. In the Sustainable Rose Garden, sculptures gracefully emerge amidst companion plantings, while in other areas, brightly colored forms punctuate sweeping vistas or appear playfully among ancient trees. The characters within "Anchorball" vary from whimsical, rabbit-like figures to tranquil women's faces adorned with floral coiffures, alongside minimalist blossoms with gracefully curved, monolithic stems.

Engaging with Art: A Slow and Intentional Experience

These captivating figures were initially designed in 3D digital models before being brought to life as fiberglass sculptures. The exhibition's augmented reality component introduces animated digital artworks that become active only when viewed on-site, fostering a compelling dialogue between the tangible landscape and virtual space. "This project has certainly pushed our boundaries, but in the most beneficial way," she reflects. "Bringing such an exhibition to fruition necessitated exploring new collaborative methods, cultivating relationships with artists and creative partners, and uniting the diverse expertise of various teams across our organization. Every project offers valuable lessons, and 'Anchorball' has significantly bolstered our confidence in tackling future large-scale initiatives."
