Kvadrat's THREE Collection: Elevating Drapes to Sculptural Art

The contemporary design landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting its focus from commonly explored categories like seating and lighting to previously understated elements within our living spaces. A growing number of brands are now dedicating their creative energy to forgotten details, such as hardware and accessories, which were once considered secondary.
This evolving design philosophy, which balances stylistic innovation with functional reinterpretation, has also made its way into home textiles. With an array of expressive and visually rich carpets emerging in the market, it's only natural to question why other fabric applications, such as upholstery and window treatments, shouldn't receive similar reconsideration. Always at the forefront of textile innovation, the Danish brand Kvadrat has embraced this challenge, introducing its visually striking and structurally innovative THREE collection during this month's 3daysofdesign, Copenhagen's renowned design event.
Comprising 14 distinct new designs, the extensive collection features a diverse palette, ranging from grounding earth tones to vibrant, contemporary hues. While each design boasts its unique style and texture, they are all united by a core principle: that curtains can, and should, possess the same formal and aesthetic significance as sculpture and architectural elements. This collection marks a departure from conventional, understated color-blocking, embracing intricate patterns and volumetric variations. Natural fibers such as hemp, wool, and organic cotton are celebrated for their inherent qualities, allowing their intrinsic textures to shine through. The collection also serves as a testament to the enduring beauty and versatility of age-old weaving techniques.
One notable offering, Tetra, available in shades like Wool, Tan, Reed, Bark, and Dim Grey, achieves an ethereal, flowing, and three-dimensional effect through its leno weave and dense wool-yarn composition. Another flame-retardant curtain fabric, Triple Tone, utilizes the time-honored jacquard method to create a captivating shimmering finish.
Isa Glink, Kvadrat Residential Creative Director, candidly shared that the development of this diverse range drew inspiration from sartorial contouring and construction. This indicates a positive synergy emerging from the fashion industry's increasing engagement with furniture and home furnishings. Beyond the potential pitfalls of superficial, image-driven trends, the furniture sector is benefiting from the fashion industry's advanced techniques in assembly and form-finding.
Kajak, available in Creamy White, Maple, Khaki, Fresh Water, and Misty Sage, showcases an exceptionally intricate tailoring stitch that evokes the mesmerizing movement of water. Streamline, with its subtly varied, layered surface pattern, reveals its full beauty under diverse natural and artificial lighting conditions.
For those seeking bolder and more expressive options, Loop Line and Magnet stand out. Loop Line combines a distinctive blend of cut-pile wool yarn with a fresh linen base, while Magnet features an open yet structurally robust warp knit. This graphic, almost architectural textile, offered in cleverly curated shades like Laser Lemon, Sensha Green, and Nightwave, magnifies the industrial netting commonly found across various industries. Reflecting the collection's overall fashion-forward approach, Magnet can also be customized with a zipper, addressing the growing consumer desire for effortless adaptability.
