Robert Mnuchin's Rothko Painting Achieves $85.8 Million at Sotheby's

A significant artwork by Mark Rothko, once part of esteemed art dealer Robert Mnuchin's collection, recently sold for an impressive $85.8 million at Sotheby's. This monumental transaction places the painting among the most valuable works by the Abstract Expressionist master ever to be auctioned, though it fell just short of establishing a new individual record for the artist. The event highlights the enduring appeal and market strength of Rothko's iconic Color Field compositions within the art world.
The painting, titled 'Brown and Blacks in Reds' and created in 1957, was a highlight of a specialized sale featuring works from Mnuchin's personal collection. Its sale price, including additional fees, reached $85.8 million, securing its position as the second most expensive Rothko ever to change hands via auction. While the hammer price of $74 million initially placed it at the lower end of its estimated range of $70 million to $100 million, the final figure prompted considerable enthusiasm in the Sotheby's salesroom.
The artwork's distinguished history significantly contributed to its high demand. It first premiered at the Sidney Janis Gallery, a pivotal venue that championed Abstract Expressionist artists, and subsequently became part of the Joseph E. Seagram & Sons, Inc. collection, adorning the lobby of their Manhattan headquarters. In 2003, the conglomerate Vivendi, which had acquired Seagram, put the painting up for auction at Christie's, where it sold for $6.7 million. At that time, Robert Mnuchin acquired two Rothko pieces, with 'Brown and Blacks in Reds' being one, and the larger 'No. 9 (White and Black on Wine)' from 1958 setting a new record for Rothko at $16.3 million.
Since that period, the auction prices for Rothko's works have surged dramatically. The standing record for a Rothko painting remains $86.9 million, established in 2012 with the sale of 'Orange, Red, Yellow' (1961) at Christie's. Mnuchin, who operated an influential Upper East Side gallery until his passing in 2025, owned a diverse collection of significant art. The Sotheby's auction presented eleven of his notable pieces, all of which successfully sold, including works by celebrated artists such as Willem de Kooning, Pablo Picasso, Franz Kline, and a sculpture by Jeff Koons.
This sale reaffirms the robust market for Mark Rothko's art, demonstrating that even without setting a new record, his pieces continue to command substantial prices, reflecting their artistic importance and desirability among collectors worldwide. The provenance of the painting, coupled with its artistic merit, ensured its status as a premier offering in the art market.
