Sony Unveils Advanced 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS Lens for Professional Photographers

Sony has recently introduced its latest marvel in photographic technology, a sophisticated telephoto zoom lens tailored for the discerning professional. This new optic, not merely an iteration but a significant evolution, aims to redefine standards for sports, wildlife, and photojournalism, offering a blend of optical excellence and advanced functionality.

Introducing Sony's FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS: A New Era for Telephoto Photography

In an exciting development for the photographic community, Sony officially announced the release of its groundbreaking FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS lens. Unveiled to the public on a recent date, this cutting-edge G Master series lens is poised to become an indispensable tool for professionals specializing in high-speed sports, elusive wildlife, and demanding photojournalistic assignments. Unlike its predecessors, this model foregoes the traditional 'Mark II' designation, signifying a departure from conventional upgrades and a bold step forward in lens design.

A standout feature of this newly engineered lens is its constant f/4.5 aperture across the entire zoom range. This offers a distinct advantage, providing two-thirds of a stop more light at the telephoto end compared to older models, which translates to superior subject isolation and enhanced performance in varied lighting conditions. Complementing this, the lens boasts an innovative inner-zoom design, ensuring its physical length remains unchanged during zooming. This thoughtful engineering preserves the lens's balance and handling, a critical factor for photographers working in dynamic environments. The older 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS, by contrast, extended its barrel when zoomed, potentially affecting stability.

Optically, Sony has spared no expense. The FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS incorporates an impressive array of specialized glass elements, including two Super ED, one ED XA (extra-low dispersion extreme aspherical), one XA, and three standard ED elements. These components, combined with Sony’s proprietary Nano AR Coating II, are meticulously designed to suppress aberrations, minimize flaring, and virtually eliminate the 'onion ring' effect in bokeh, promising exceptional image clarity and exquisite background blur. The lens further enhances its bokeh capabilities with an 11-bladed circular aperture, offering two more blades than its predecessor for even smoother out-of-focus areas.

Performance-wise, the new lens exhibits remarkable advancements in autofocus (AF) technology. Equipped with four of Sony's most sophisticated XD Linear Motors, it delivers up to three times faster AF speeds and a 50% improvement in subject tracking accuracy. This significant leap ensures photographers can capture fleeting moments with unparalleled precision. While its close-focusing distance at 100mm is 0.64 meters (2.1 feet) and at 400mm is 1.5 meters (4.9 feet), resulting in a maximum magnification of 0.25x, it is slightly less than the 0.35x of the older 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6.

The enhanced features and robust build do come with an increase in size and weight. The new 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS weighs 1,840 grams (4.06 pounds) and measures 328 millimeters (12.9 inches) in length at 400mm, reflecting its professional-grade construction. It also supports Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, extending its reach to 140-560mm f/6.3 or an astounding 200-800mm f/9, respectively. Designed for rigorous use, the lens boasts dust- and moisture-resistant construction, along with multiple functional controls, including four Focus Hold buttons, a rotating tripod collar, and an assignable function ring.

The Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is slated for release in early June, with a U.S. price tag of $4,299.99 and a Canadian price of $5,599.99, reflecting its premium standing in the market and its advanced capabilities.

This launch marks a pivotal moment for professional photographers seeking an uncompromising telephoto solution. Sony's commitment to pushing the boundaries of optical engineering and photographic technology is evident in every aspect of this new lens. It's a clear signal that the company continues to listen to the needs of its high-end users, delivering tools that not only meet but exceed expectations, enabling the capture of breathtaking images with unprecedented detail and precision. The enhanced performance, combined with robust construction, truly positions this lens as a game-changer for demanding photographic disciplines.
