Transforming Nature: Brazilian Children's Sustainable Furniture Designs

The "Philia & Kids" initiative, spearheaded by Galerie Philia in partnership with designer Gisela Simas, provides an inspiring platform for young minds to delve into the world of design. This unique program engages children from marginalized communities in Petrópolis, Brazil, fostering creativity, environmental consciousness, and a deeper appreciation for sustainable practices. By transforming fallen trees into functional and artistic furniture pieces, the project showcases the innovative potential within these aspiring designers and highlights the profound connection between nature, materials, and artistic expression.

Unlocking Creativity: Brazilian Youth Sculpting a Sustainable Future Through Design.

The Genesis of an Inspiring Design Program: Philia & Kids Initiative

For its third consecutive iteration, Galerie Philia has once again launched its philanthropic program, "Philia & Kids," dedicated to enriching children's lives through collaborative design workshops. This year, the initiative proudly partnered with the acclaimed designer Gisela Simas. Together, they worked with children aged 9 to 11 from disadvantaged communities in Petrópolis, a city in Brazil. This collaborative effort, which previously debuted in 2022, is designed to create meaningful interactions between established designers and the younger generation. It explores how the principles of design can serve as a powerful instrument for education, sparking creativity, and cultivating environmental awareness among participants.

Connecting with Nature: From Botanical Gardens to Creative Design

Over several months, the young participants embarked on a series of immersive workshops that delved into the intrinsic connection between the natural world, various materials, and artistic form. A significant aspect of their learning journey involved visits to Marambaia Farm, renowned for its gardens meticulously crafted by the esteemed landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. These excursions allowed the students to meticulously observe natural structures and organic shapes, which subsequently served as the foundational inspiration for their innovative design concepts. Under the guidance of Simas, the children were encouraged to conceptualize and sketch their own unique furniture sculptures. These imaginative drawings were then brought to life by skilled artisans, including Thomaz Brasil, Tomé Peregrino, Cláudio, Paulo Pissurno, and Vinícius César, who masterfully crafted the pieces from wood reclaimed from fallen trees. Each finished work not only embodies the vivid imagination of its young creator but also conveys a broader, impactful message about the critical importance of sustainability and resourcefulness in material reuse.

Showcasing Young Talent: Exhibitions and a Charitable Auction

The remarkable finished pieces, which include a captivating sculpture by fifth-grader Fellype, an innovative lamp designed by fourth-grader Davi, and a practical coat rack conceptualized by fifth-grader Eduarda, were first unveiled at an exhibition held at Petropolis’ Crystal Palace in May. Following this successful debut, the exhibition traveled to São Paulo for a second public showing, continuing to inspire audiences with the children's ingenuity. These works are now slated to be featured in a significant charitable auction on June 9, 2026. This event will not only showcase the students' creations but also include works by other internationally celebrated artists and sculptural designers specially selected by Galerie Philia. Each student's piece is envisioned as part of a limited edition collection. In the event of a sale, additional editions (starting from 2/8 onwards) will be meticulously produced. All proceeds generated from this auction, as well as from any subsequent sales, will be entirely dedicated to supporting and expanding the invaluable Philia & Kids initiative, ensuring its continued impact and reach.
