Unauthorized Billy Joel Biopic Sparks Controversy

The Piano Man's Early Days: A Film Without His Blessing
A Biographical Film Unfolds Without Its Subject's Consent
A new cinematic endeavor, titled "Billy & Me," is set to chronicle the formative years of the iconic musician Billy Joel, tracing his journey before achieving widespread recognition in the 1970s. However, this biographical project is moving forward without the explicit approval or involvement of Joel himself. His representatives have made it unequivocally clear that the filmmakers do not possess the necessary life rights or music rights to proceed, characterizing any continued production as both legally and professionally ill-advised.
The Narrative Through Another's Eyes: Manager Irwin Mazur's Perspective
In light of Billy Joel's non-participation, "Billy & Me" will reportedly present the story of his early career through the experiences of Irwin Mazur, Joel's inaugural manager. Mazur, who first discovered Joel in 1966 and signed him in 1970, played a crucial role in securing his recording contract with Columbia Records in 1972, a pivotal step towards his eventual global stardom. The production has successfully acquired Mazur's exclusive life rights, along with those of Jon Small, Joel's long-time friend, drummer, and video director, who will serve as a consultant and co-executive producer.
Creative Team and Production Schedule
The screenplay for "Billy & Me" is being penned by filmmaker Adam Ripp, with his company, ArtPhyl Pictures, undertaking the production. Jon Small has expressed his confidence in the film's authenticity, stating that the script accurately captures Joel's early life before fame. Small emphasizes that the film is rooted in truth and built with insights from individuals who genuinely know and care for Joel, aiming to provide a real history rather than exaggerating or mythologizing his story. Principal photography is slated to commence in Fall 2026, with filming locations planned for Canada and various sites across New York.
Director's Previous Work and Anticipation
The project will be helmed by John Ottman, who previously served as lead editor for the successful Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael," released earlier this year. Ottman's involvement brings a level of expertise to the biographical genre, setting expectations for a compelling narrative despite the challenges posed by the subject's lack of endorsement. The commencement of casting is currently in progress as the production gears up for its scheduled start.
