Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Enriches Collection with a Significant Photography Donation

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) recently announced a monumental acquisition: a collection of nearly 2,000 photographic works. This significant endowment, originating from the Joy of Giving Something Inc., a non-profit dedicated to promoting photographic arts and education, substantially enriches the museum's existing photography archives.
This diverse collection, meticulously built by financier Howard Stein since the 1980s, encompasses a vast range of photographic history. It includes rare daguerreotypes by Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey, compelling prints from pioneers like Nadar, Gustave Le Gray, and Eugène Atget, as well as an extensive selection of 19th-century vernacular photographs. Furthermore, the gift bolsters the museum's American photography collection with pieces from influential modern artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, Man Ray, Berenice Abbott, and Dorothea Lange, alongside contemporary contributions by Cindy Sherman.
Alex Nyerges, Director and CEO of VMFA, emphasized that this extraordinary gift will profoundly enhance the museum's capacity to showcase the rich narrative of photography. The new additions will be prominently featured in the museum's five upcoming photography galleries, slated to open in 2027 as part of VMFA's extensive renovation and expansion project. This development underscores the museum's commitment to offering engaging displays and public programs, solidifying its position as a leading cultural institution in the United States.
This remarkable donation not only broadens the artistic horizons available to the public but also ensures the preservation and celebration of photographic heritage for future generations. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of art to inspire, educate, and connect individuals across time and cultures, reflecting a profound dedication to enriching societal understanding through visual narratives.
